What to try: Flat white with homemade cookie and Lemon Cheesecake

Love the cheesecake coz it’s not too heavy but the cheese is really smooth, perfect to go with your coffee. Coffee taste great, not so much of the bitter type, suits most people from different age groups.
Very warm and friendly cafe, with super comfy chairs and tea-lounge like interior. Great for a weekend gathering with your best friends to gossip, maybe complaint about work and of course laugh heheh…

San Low Seafood Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

San Low Seafood Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 with over 30 years of experience first started out in a small hawker stall  before relocating to where they are now at Taman Pelangi. The current location is around 15 minutes journey from City Square / Causeway and will cost less than RM10 (make sure you request for the metre to be activated when you board the cab). It can difficult locating this restaurant as it is sited at a private residential area.

esides serving fresh seafood, San Low Seafood Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 is also well known for their  signature San Low Fried Bee Hoon. Alight and when you see the place above.

When the signature San Low Fried Bee Hoon (rice vermicelli) was served, my first thought was that it look so ordinary. It was another case of ‘never to judge a book by its cover’. It was fried with prawns, vegetables (chye sim), egg, fish cake and chicken meat. The bee hoon was infused in seafood broth and fried to perfection. It was charred and crisp on the outside, yet moist on the inside. Furthermore, it was not oily. An unique dish that was incredibly delicious despite the simplicity of the ingredients! A must try.
The San Low Fried Bee Hoon most essential step towards the end of the cooking process is to press-fry the bee hoon under high heat to get this end result. This dish is so appealing that many other restaurants in Johor Bahru has copied the cooking method and serve this dish.

Stirred fried Hong Kong Kai Lan was ordinary. It was well fried and the vegetables still retained the crunchiness. However, it was on the salty end.

We also ordered, two Chilli Crabs weighing close to 1kg. San Low Seafood Restaurant serves a mean plate of Singapore-Style Chilli Crab that will put some of our Singapore restaurants to shame.
I was most impressed with the gravy. Robust spicy, sweet eggy gravy with the right amount of starch (to thicken the sauce). The spiciness and sweetness were perfect for me with the spiciness kicking in towards the end. Slices of onions were add and cooked along in it too (probably to enhance the sweetness). Moreover, the crabs were fresh and meaty. The meat easily pulled out from its shell was sweet, juicy and tender. Furthermore, the meat had absorbed the wonderful gravy. It was a delight savouring this dish!

Sin Kee Ikan Bakar

Our last stop for the day was at Sin Kee Ikan Bakar because their grilled seafood is really tasty. The sambal is not too spicy but savoury. We also had a plate of petai (irresistible stinky beans) and lady fingers which was crunchy.

Restaurant Teck Sing

After eating so much food, we were too full and decided to take a walk around (AEON) JUSCO Tebrau City Mall before trying the paper wrapped herbal chicken in Restaurant Teck Sing. Wrapped with many layers of parchment paper, when we slowly tore open the paper, it has a nice herbal aroma that we could not resist. The kampong chicken meat is very soft and tender and it can be removed from the bones easily. Each herbal chicken costs RM$18.

Restoran Lima Ratus

8561089901_1296b54318_b

Restoran Lima Ratus is a humble shop in Taman Perling run by Mr Low and his wife with an elderly helper. 75-year-old Mr Low had been a noodle seller since the Japanese Occupation in the 1930s, when he was in his early teens. Being a Fuzhou man, the one and only dish he learnt from his mother was the classic Foochow red rice wine mee suah and it has brought many praises to the foodies at the table. The mee suah was silky smooth, with tangy and sweet homemade red rice wine broth. Beside this, the stall is also famous for its wanton noodles. Their make their own noodles with duck egg, which we hardly see it nowadays! The wanton noodles are on the dry side, but it tastes good with some stirring. FYI, Mr Low has a hidden talent for mimicking bird songs!

B.E Cafe – Be yourself

B.E Cafe boasts a homey, cozy atmosphere. It is the kind of cafes that I like – laid back, not overly designed, very friendly, where the focus is mainly on coffee. It was rather quiet for a Sunday but I guess that is also what makes the cafe comfy for a nice chill out place.

Restaurant Kam Long

P8143343

Starting its operations from 8am till 4pm daily, Restaurant Kam Long is well known to locals for its Fish Head Curry. Long queues formed way early before lunch and even though it’s a blasting hot day, you can’t drive away the locals’ passion for some hot and spicy curry.

However, turnover was pretty fast, so I believe you don’t have to wait for long

P8143329

only fresh Red Snappers are used daily. Curry was fragrant and slurpy thick, making a great companion with the white rice. Not overly spicy, the Fish Head Curry was served bubbling hot from the stove, mixed in with lady’s fingers, cabbage, long beans, tofu skin and tau kee.

Here’s the order: ‘Small’ portion at RM 20 is pretty alright for sharing between 2 pax if you still wanna feel your stomach with other goodies. Rice (small) comes at RM 0.50 each.
